Will I be uncomfortable during the procedure?

You may be given a mild sedative before beginning the procedure to help you relax, but you will probably stay awake. If you have pain, discomfort or nausea please let your doctor know so that medication or other treatment may be provided to you.

Is the enteral stent sterile?

Yes, it will have been sterilized prior to delivery to your doctor.

Will it rust?

The stent is made from a special non-corrosive medical grade metal.

Will my stent cause any problems with future x-ray procedures?

No, it is visible on x-ray but will not interfere with future x-ray. However, you should always notify your doctors that you have an enteral stent in place, especially before you have x-rays, CT or MRI scans.

Will I be able to eat regular food?

Be sure to ask your doctor how soon afterwards you may eat, what type of foods you may eat and it there are any you should avoid.

Will I have regular bowel movements?

It is important for you to discuss this with your doctor as it may depend on your condition and other medical treatments. If your bowel movements change in frequency, color or consistency is sure to tell your doctor.

Should I restrict my activity?

The stent should not interfere with your activity, be sure to ask your doctor when you should resume normal activity (based on your overall condition)

How often should I see my doctor?

Your doctor will tell you how often you need to be seen and explain any special symptoms you should look for.
GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
Do:
  • Drink plenty of liquids with your meals.
  • Eat small meals.
  • Always eat in an upright position.
Avoid:
  • Fresh vegetables and fruit (celery, carrots, corn, lettuce, pineapple etc).
  • Food with seeds (oranges, watermelon, tomatoes etc).
  • Fruit or vegetable skin.
  • Nuts: peanuts, pecans, almonds, popcorn etc.
  • Thought meat (Steak).

Your doctor may also prescribe a stool softener and / or laxative or medication that stimulates the contractions of the gastrointestinal tract.
